Unformatted text preview: AHI 1DV WINTER 2010 Final TA _________ NAME ___________________ 1 PLEASE READ THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY AS SOME ITEMS HAVE CHANGED. Instructions The examination is due in person on Thursday, March 18, at 3:30 PM in Art 204, sharp. Please bring a picture ID with you. This is an open book exam. While you may rely upon your notes and online information, it is your own knowledge and understanding that is being tested. Although you are encouraged to study together, once you open this examination, you may not work together or share notes. Also, to help keep yourself free of even the temptation of academic misconduct, avoid conversations and contact with other 1DV students (past and present). Because the material covered spans over 4 millennia, all dates will be presumed to be CE unless you specify BCE. Be sure to do so where relevant. If the images seem too small for you, by all means, enlarge them to examine carefully with your computer program. Of course, if a better reproduction is available in your readings, online lectures, or Study Images, feel free to use it as you write your essay. For each comparison set, please address the following topics as relevant in a structured and typed essay. You may organize your essay in any way that works for you. Simple lists of information do not comprise an essay. In all cases, support your claims with evidence. NB: Select all of the items below that are relevant to argue an interesting and fully informative point for the comparison. Not all will be required for each comparison, though it may be that most will be required for a complete answer. Country for artists of the Asian Diaspora: include their nation of origin and the name of other countries in which they work. Artist: if the artist(s) is known, provide the name. If the artist is unknown, write "Anonymous." Period for artists of the Asian Diaspora: write "Contemporary." Medium (materials) involved for each, and its importance to its culture at the time of production discuss. Format: the form the object takes, e.g., architecture, sculpture, bronze vessel, ceramic bowl, etc. For paintings, please specify if it is a hanging scroll, handscroll, album leaf, fan, screen, banner, folding screen, etc. o How significant is this aspect of the object to the comparison? What is the relationship between the objects? What is the belief system involved, if any? If there is a belief system involved, specify the sect and explain why the object represents that sect. Technique of production: how was the object made? AHI 1DV WINTER 2010 Final TA _________ NAME ___________________ 2 o How does the technique relate to the message the artist is trying to communicate? o How does the technique relate to the format Scale: what does the object's size signify for each object? Subject matter and/or theme discuss Motifs: identify them and explain what they signify. Figural or animal elements in a sculptural program (i.e., a complex sculpted work of any scale or medium): identify them and explain what they signify For paintings, how does the use of monochrome ink or color enhance the purpose of the work and the message that the artist is trying to communicate? For examples of architecture: identify the structural components (draw a diagram and name the parts), and discuss its plan and axiality. Hand drawn diagrams and plans are acceptable. Patronage (who sponsored/paid for the production of the objects); how does this affect its scale, its placement/location, its importance? Function/purpose of each, both explicit and implicit How does knowing this information affect your understanding of the object and its importance to its particular culture at the time of production?
