Determination of Trace Iron Using a UV-Visible Spectrophotometer Ashay Mehta November 6 th , 2009 Objective: To understand the fundamentals of spectroscopy by learning how to use it. Also to learn how to determine the trace iron using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. Theory: Light is electromagnetic radiation. The interaction of electromagnetic radiation with matter is useful in many ways to determine both the identity of compounds and their concentrations in mixtures. Electromagnetic radiation has both a wave and a particle character. Both the wavelength and frequency are related to the photon energy. The interaction of radiation and matter can matter can be put to use in either the emission or absorption modes. An absorption spectrum is a plot of amount of radiation absorbed
