Spectrophotometry of a Two Component Mixture: Determination of Cobalt and Nickel as EDTA Complexes Ashay Mehta November 16 th , 2009 Objective: To successfully learn how to analyze mixtures using a UV/VIS spectrometer. Theory: According to Beer’s law, the absorbance (A) of a solution is equal to the absorbance, which is denoted by (ε), times the cell length, denoted by (b), times the concentration, denoted by (C), at a given wavelength: A = ε b C If a solution contains two or maybe more species, the measured absorbance at a given wavelength will be the sum of all absorbances at that wavelength. We can find the concentration of each element in a mixture by determining the absorbances of each species, measuring the total absorbance, and solving the equation from above. Procedure: First, I made the working standards. To prepare the cobalt, Co, solution, I weighed out roughly 0.3g of the metal and transferred it into a 100mL volumetric flask. Then, I added 15mL of 2M HNO
