Naina Kaushal Organic Chemistry II May 1, 2009 Project 2: Electrophilic Aromatic Substitution (EAS) Electrophilic aromatic substitution is a type of organic reaction where an electrophile is substituted onto an aromatic ring. The Friedel-Crafts Alkylation is a type of electrophilic aromatic substitution. Alkylation is also known as a way of substituting an alkyl group onto a benzene ring. A hydrogen atom on the ring is usually replaced by a methyl or another substituent group. In order to first create toluene, which is simply a benzene ring with a methyl group attached you must perform the following reaction. The Friedel- Crafts alkylation of benzene takes place with the presence of benzene and methyl chloride. As a result, toluene and hydrogen chloride are formed. If actually looked at, the Friedel- Crafts alkylation of methylbenzene is the same exact mechanism as that used to create methylbenzene initially. The position of the substituent on the benzene ring is dependent on the most stable conformation of the various substituents in relation to each other.
