Prachi Shah Honors Organic Chemistry I Chem 243H Fall 2008 Due Date: 12/1/08 IUPAC Name Heat of Formation Relative Heat of Formation (2R) 1-Bromo-2-Chloro butane -108.430 0 (2S) 1-Bromo-2-Chlorobutane -108.430 0 1-Bromo-2-Chlorobutane has one chiral center at the second carbon hence it forms two different stereoisomers. The two stereoisomers formed a set of enantiomers. According to the Cahn-Inglod-Prelog System, one enantiomer had the (R) configuration and the other had the (S) configuration. Our results show that both molecules have the same heat of formation. This is accurate because the two molecules are mirror images of each other, so the magnitude of the intermolecular forces operating between the two molecules is the same. If we were to differentiate between the two molecules we must analyze their behavior toward plane polarized light, or its optical activity. However their physical properties will be identical.
