Title: Experiment 1 – Solation and Purification of Caffeine Names of Partners: Raj Darji and Ashay Mehta Due Date: Due March 1 st , 2010 Course Number: CHEM-244A – Organic Chemistry II Lab Objective: the purpose of this lab was to isolate pure caffeine and test chromatographically how pure your sample is. The pure caffeine was tested against a raw sample as well as a standard sample which was provided. Operations Carried Out: A. Solid-Liquid Extraction 1. First, we obtained 14 tea bags without cutting the bags. 2. We placed all 14 tea bags in a 1 liter beaker. 3. We added approximately 6 grams of sodium carbonate. 4. Then, we added about 250 milliliters of tap water. We let that boil for 5 minutes on a hot plate. After that, we stopped the heating. 5. We added ice cubes to cool to room temperature and then removed the tea bags without breaking the tea bags. We discarded the tea bags as original waste. 6. Lastly, we removed the beaker from the hot plate.
