The Gospel of Matthew Key Issue: dealing with opposing      claims to legitimate religious       authority - i.e. “ Pharisees and Sadducees ”  present opposing claims - Matthew is  extremely negative  toward the Jewish leaders author appeals to Jewish roots : * portrays Jesus as the  legitimate  fulfillment of Jewish scripture * genealogy: Jesus  is  the “next big thing” in Jewish/salvation history * “Echoes” of Moses’ story - Mary & Joeseph flee to Egypt, God “delivers” them Universal salvation - sometimes called  the “most Jewish” gospel: ~ many references to Jewish scripture ~ seemingly “anit-Gentile” statements are made: “I was sent  only  to the house of Israel” (15:22-28) ~ strict observance of the Torah is mandated: (5:17-20) - however,  clear  mission to the Gentiles also: magi  are first to worship Jesus ~ in support of mission to Gentiles: (10:5-6; 15:24; 28:19) *Much more appealing portrait of the disciples - they worship Jesus and are praised * CHRISTOLOGY:  Supreme Teacher  w/ credentials evident in  Jewish history Jesus = Divine Wisdom = interpreter of the Torah * Christ as “ worshiped ”  - addressed with prayer language “ Kyrie Eleison ”= Lord, have mercy The Gospel of Mark Key Issue:
