Paden Allen CHEM 107-513 09 September 2008 Chemistry 107 Lab Report #1: Conservation of Mass and Volume Summary The purpose of this lab was to better acquaint oneself with the chemistry apparatus, procedures and then comprehend the idea of conservation of mass and volume by using the results of combining liquids and observing any changes in mass or volume. To do this, we first used a graduated cylinder, volumetric pipette and water to determine the average amount of liquid transferred via pipette as well as determine the mass of water versus the volume as a control. Then we found the density of acetone using our data and understanding of Volume=Mass/Density. Finally, we mixed water and acetone in various combinations to determine if their masses and volumes were conserved or not. Our findings proved to be supportive of our understanding of the aforementioned formula and our understanding the conservation of mass with minimal error. Experimental Data
