Lipid bilayer – 2 layers of fat molecules b. Proteins communicating from the outside of the cells to the inside III. Cell body/soma-internal anatomy a. Controlling all functions that keep the cell alive b. Soma contains organelles that are critical for the synthesis of proteins and their transport c. Soma contains mitochondria that provides energy to the cell i. Nucleus: contains the DNA for the cell ii. Endoplasmic reticulum (ER): synthesis of fats (smooth ER) and proteins (rough ER) iii. Golgi complex: packages proteins into vesicles iv. Microtubules: transport packaged proteins to other parts of the cell IV. Parts of a neuron – dendrites a. Dendrites: receive signals from other neurons i. Chemical info is obtained and converted to electrical information
