State-society relations d. Religion and culture i. Analyzing contemporary conflicts requires serious appreciation of the current function of states III. Ottoman Empire a. Extended into Europe, surrounded the Middle East b. Pre-modern struggles between Christendom and Ottoman Empire (Islam) c. Ottoman Empire in decline i. Characterized as “sick man” of Europe ii. If Ottoman Empire was defeated, the Arab state would be established 1. end of WWI = end of Ottoman Empire a. establishment of Turkey b. Turkey then becomes independent nation state c. The Middle East was broken into colonized states i. Ex. Algeria, Morrocco, Tunisia (French) ii. Egypt/Sundan (Britain) iii. Saudi Arabia got its own independence iv. British and French mandates 1. divided up map 2. France took Syria
