IntroductionA company’s capability to innovate efficiently is critical to its ability to realize strategic competitiveness. As noted by numerous researchers (e.g., Butler, 1988; Miller, 1989), the need for innovation is vital for all firms because of the quick pace and changeability of technology, as well as the escalating speed with which competitors often are able to produce new products, services and processes to market (Teece, 1987). Innovation also is important because it can result in competitive advantage if the innovation is difficult for competitors to imitate, provides value to customers and can be successfully exploited commercially. British Airways, for example, implemented customer service online and self checking at the airports. Though the restructuring affected employee morale because jobs were lost, the company increased in efficiency and cost leadership. Strategic Information Systems uses two approaches, inwardly focused and outwardly focused. An inwardly focused system is “focused on enhancing the competitive position of the firm by increasing employees’ productivity, improving teamwork and enhancing communication” (Turban et al., 3). Because of new technology, the internal workings of Kudler Fine Foods can be optimized far beyond the owner’s initial vision. For example, the new website and inventory/ordering automation will allow
