November 30, 2009 INTERNATIONAL POLITICAL ECONOMY Meredith Huber Lecture 11/30 Current Event: DUBI—Debt what is the significance for the management of the global financial system Globalization—how parts of the world economy have moved towards a “globalized model of world economy”—borders of states are more or less meaningless MULTINATIONAL CORPORATIONS Definition: Any enterprise that has production centers in 2 or more countries. This is a new development! It used to be companies would import materials they needed and export—it changed in the 1950s/60s. MNC have proliferated in the last 20 th century. Perspectives on the MNC: o Liberal—likes MNC, they are the “market at work”, following market incentives, bringing more material goods and services, the view is very positive, it is an agent for prosperity, representative of the market in action o Marxists: MNC—negative, increase profit at the expense of others, zero sum terms, take advantage of under developed countries, agent of exploitation o Realist: MNC don’t like them because they present a threat to the “power of the state” they are actors who may have more power than the state in which the operate History o Until 20 th century, mostly extractive—industries that pull out of the ground or the ocean (farming, mining, etc.)—First was the East India Co. but the number of MNC was quite small
