NOTES ON Postpositions को and # with Personal Objects 1. In Hindi language the Object of a sentence may be marked by the postposition को . If the object is inanimate (not referring to a human being) the use of the postposition may add a meaning of definiteness, which is conveyed in English by the definite article “the” (although this is only an approximate equivalence*). Example ( उदाहरण m. ): वह अख़बार खरीदती 1 She buys (a) newspaper वह अख़बार को पढ़ती 1 She reads the newspaper * Sometimes this postposition is simply used to emphasize the inanimate object: 4कताब पढ़ो Read the book 4कताब को ढ़ो Read the book 2. However , if the object of a sentence is animate (a person) then a postposition is generally used :- आप उस को ब%लाइ) Call (summon / invite / call out to) him / her. 8 आप को पढ़ाता 9: I teach you. मा: को सब क<छ बताओ / बता दो Tell mom everything. उस आदमी को .खो Look at that man. आप उस 0 प1िछ) Ask (inquire) him / her. आप लोग म@झ 0 पढ़B C ????? (You guys study by me ???) [Very natural, not odd in Hindi ] मा: D म@झ 0 प1छा Mom asked me (asked a question). 8 दोEत 0 िमल15गी I will meet (my) friend. 8 दोEत 0 बा8 क95गी I will talk to / converse with (my) friend. 8
