Intrapersonal Communication (Perception) - Perception Processes - We make sense of people/world through three mental processes - 1. Attention - 2. Organization - 3. Interpretation - Attention - Perception is selective --> we don’t notice everything - Internal factors affecting attention: - physiological filters (limitations of our senses) - psychological filters (difference in different classes you take. .the amt of attention you give each class depending on if you want to take the class or not --> motivation or interest) - past experience or expectations - External factors affecting attention: - Salience (stimulus stands out from others --> visual contrast, sound, movement, etc) - Vividness (stimulus provokes emotional response) - Organization - Perception is structured - Proximity: we perceive separate stimuli as related if close to each other - Similarity: we perceive stimuli as related if similar to each other
