Professional Coaches Code Professional Coaches Code of Ethics and Values Professional sports coaches are charged with acquiring superior results through instruction and guidance of athletes. Coaches must have superior knowledge about their sport, sports equipment, physical fitness, safety and personnel management. A true professional coach will be a visible role model on and off the playing field as in their public and private life. Coaching not only requires keen knowledge but also the ability to impart the knowledge. This paper will discuss ethics and values of professional coaches and how it influences their success in the profession. It will also entail definitions on ethics and values, examples of professional coach’s impacts on career success, and sources of values and ethics for professional coaches. Ethics and Values Ethic Definition As defined in the Black Issues in Higher Education (1998) , is to provide standards of professional conduct that can be applied by the United States Olympic Committee (USOS) and Associates, (n.d.). An identical definition was also, taken from The Road Runners Club of America , (n.d.) Values Models According to the article, Pursing Victory with Honor article , coaches use value and mission models. The two different models to consider are Recreation and Business (as cited on Pursuing Victory with Honor website,2009) The Recreational Model, emphasizes the importance of a team. Giving athletes a sense of belonging and companionship is an important value to instill. When the competition is balanced it provides the players with fulfillment and gives both sides a competitive chance to win. 2

Professional Coaches Code Participants have an opportunity to enjoy themselves without emphasis on winning, no matter what skill level the players rank. The recreational model provides a nurturing and affirming environment that builds on a confidence. Coaches need to maintain a positive and respectful attitude when praising and disciplining their athletes. Coaches need to be giving constructive criticism, and careful thinking of improvements. Business model, emphasizes the winning coaches’ success measured in terms of revenue,
