(a) Predict based on simple molecular orbital theory whether H 2 or He + 2 requires more energy to remove the highest-energy electron. (b) An MO approach to bonding predicts the same bond order for the two isoelectronic species HeH and He + 2 . Describe the bond order, and identify which ion you expect to have a longer bond. (c) Suppose we supply enough energy to a molecule of H 2 to remove one of its electrons. In the resulting ion H + 2 , is the binding energy of remaining electron higher, the same, or lower than that of the electron which we removed?
