Describe the changes in polymer structure which give rise to the increase in mechanical properties using words and, if desired, a sketch. Initially, deformation occurs by stretching and breaking of weak secondary bonds between polymer molecules. As deformation proceeds, polymer chains are straightened and become aligned in the direction of the applied stress.
