CorrelationofthestructureofthesemRNAswiththestructure oftheearlySV40proteins,smallTantigen(17,000daltons)and largeTantigen(90,000daltons),determinedbyotherssuggests that:(i)translationofthe2500-nucleotidemRNA yieldssmall Tantigen; (ii)translationofthe2200-nucleotidemRNAproceeds throughthesplicepointintheRNAtoproducelargeTantigen (andthuslargeTantigenisencodedintwoseparateregionsof theviralgenome);and(iii)theDNA sequencesbetween -0.67 and -0.60presentinbothmRNAs aretranslatedinthesame reading frame inboth mRNAs toyieldtwo separate gene productsthathavethesame NH2-terminalsequence.Therefore, expressionoftheearlySV40genesispartiallycontrolledatthe levelofsplicingofRNAs. Thegenomeofsimianvirus40(SV40)isaclosedcircularduplex DNA moleculeapproximately5000basepairsinlength.The genetic informationencodedinapproximatelyhalfofthisDNA is expressedduringtheearlyphaseofinfectionintheformof two proteins(1-3).Thelargerofthese,largeTantigen,hasa molecularweightestimatedbysodiumdodecylsulfate/poly- acrylamidegelelectrophoresistobe90,000-100,000(4),while theother,smallTantigen,hasamolecularweightofapproxi- mately17,000(1-3).Thesmall Tantigen sharesaconsiderable fractionofitsaminoacidsequencewiththelargeTantigen, suggesting thatportionsofthese twoproteinsare encodedin thesame DNA sequence (2,3,5)....
