Abstract Asphalt superpave volumetric design and compaction tests provide engineers with the data for what type of asphalt should be used in specific climates and traffic conditions. The objective of this lab was to perform standard laboratory tests on compacted hot mix asphalt (HMA) mixtures to determine the effect of varying design mixes and materials on the degree of compaction and percent air voids in compacted bituminous samples. The specimens were recorded for their dry weight, weight submerged under water, and the saturated surface dry weight . The results showed that the top-virgin specimens were about the lightest specimens submerged under water, and the base-virgin specimens were the heaviest. The results were used to calculate the bulk specific gravity of the asphalt mixture, percent water absorbed, percent compaction and the percent air voids for each sample. The average and standard deviation for all of the samples were used to compare average results from different design mixes and if the samples were within PennDOT’s acceptance criteria. 3
