How do the authors approach the question of why American households  are changing? 2.  How do the authors explain the failure of American families to live up to our  “family ideal” either in the past or in the present? 3. How has the percent of 30-40 year olds living as singles changed over the  past hundred years?  Where are the peaks and valleys? a. It has increased by 30% b. Peaks were in 1910 with a steady increase from 1970 to 2000 while there  was a valley in 1960. 4. How do those percentages vary by race? a. For African- Americans went up 17 points over the century but it only  went up 8 points for whites.   5. How is that trend affecting elderly women in this country a. Elderly are now living longer and alone. They are finishing parenting earlier  and have fewer children. They are living longer and also have more money  and better health. 1
