Unformatted text preview: CE4401 Spring 2008 Homework #13 Due Friday Dec 18 by 4:00 in my office For all problems assume a #3 tie and max agg size of 3/4” unless otherwise stated. You may make any other assumptions necessag, but be sure to state them in your solutions 1. Make a list of all the references you have seen in class or doing homework to the ACI code this list should include the classes through Wednesday May. 6 and this homework assignment. Include the code section, code page number, the topic, and a brief summary of what the code says in that section if possible ( i.e. if you can summarize it in a few words otherwise leave this column blank). Do not copy word for word out of the code. For the short column of cross section shown (20” X 22’) , find ¢Pn, ¢Mn and e at the condition when the strain in the extreme tension layer of steel is 0.0021 at ultimate using basic principals (i.e. draw a strain diagram, and then a stress diagram, sum forces, sum moments, etc). The column is reinforced with 8 #10 bars as shown and a No. 3 tie (not shown for simplicity). The center of the #10 bars is 2.5” from the closest outside edge (i.e. cover + dtie + .Sdlo = 2.5”). The concrete strength is 5 ksi, the steel strength is 60 ksi. Check by using the charts. Bending is about the strong axis. Do not bother checking/designing ties. l%20”—-——9[ l l . Design a short, square tied column to carry a factored axial design load P, of 710 kips and a factored design moment 11/1u of 150 ft-kips. Place the longitudinal reinforcing uniformly in all four faces. fc’ = 5ksi and j; = 60ksi. (use the charts). Also, design the ties for the column, you may use #3 or #4 ties as you see fit. Assume that the moment diagram goes from 0 moment at the base to 150 ft—kips at the top linearly. The length of the column is 12 ft. Draw a typical cross section of the column showing the bars and ties. You do NOT need to verify your design with hand calculations — you only need use the provided interaction charts. You should verify that your column meets the requirements to be considered short. ’ - 5 SQUARES ‘9 , 5 SQUARES 4 9 200 SHEETS EVEEASEW - 5 SQUARES 0 SHEETS EYE-E “ 0 uHEFTS EVF E ”fig" Fiflfiflfifié' figmmi } i I i i i c0: Ci: \i V fig! ;? 2 ‘5 {5517 £38 yaks} :: 12%;; Hp / AK ;? ; 3R§LETQLAZ> {93503; :1 2175:6343 (“aw ‘ g (53) \$30 \$065!“; cam}; a fiij @526 f (‘3’: gag!“ + gig“ .3» Saglgw : ”Egg-{s} ° '54 g £55! “13:7 ”‘11:: gfia§ { ff.‘ K p f L {Na (m w gum? lgffifig 3M 1%.? i é’fiséwe 3kg? {3‘ saw/\$3M}, OfiS‘fiib bggfl : 53 ‘ég i?) ### What students are saying

• As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

Kiran Temple University Fox School of Business ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

Dana University of Pennsylvania ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
