You may make any other assumptions necessag, but be sure to state them in your solutions 1. Make a list of all the references you have seen in class or doing homework to the ACI code this list should include the classes through Wednesday May. 6 and this homework assignment. Include the code section, code page number, the topic, and a brief summary of what the code says in that section if possible ( i.e. if you can summarize it in a few words otherwise leave this column blank). Do not copy word for word out of the code. For the short column of cross section shown (20” X 22’) , find ¢Pn, ¢Mn and e at the condition when the strain in the extreme tension layer of steel is 0.0021 at ultimate using basic principals (i.e. draw a strain diagram, and then a stress diagram, sum forces, sum moments, etc). The column is reinforced with 8 #10 bars as shown and a No. 3 tie (not shown for simplicity). The center of the #10 bars is 2.5” from the closest outside edge (i.e. cover + dtie + .Sdlo = 2.5”). The concrete strength is 5 ksi, the steel strength is 60 ksi. Check by using the charts. Bending is about the strong axis. Do not bother checking/designing ties. l%20”—-——9[ l l . Design a short, square tied column to carry a factored axial design load P, of 710 kips and a factored design moment 11/1u of 150 ft-kips. Place the longitudinal reinforcing uniformly in all four faces. fc’ = 5ksi and j; = 60ksi. (use the charts). Also, design the ties for the column, you may use #3 or #4 ties as you see fit. Assume that the moment diagram goes from 0 moment at the base to 150 ft—kips at the top linearly. The length of the column is 12 ft. Draw a typical cross section of the column showing the bars and ties. You do NOT need to verify your design with hand calculations — you only need use the provided interaction charts.
