Art history notes 10/21/09 The word for messenger in Greece is angelus. Angels have wings because they are messengers of gods. Balancing on one leg tying or untying her sandal because she is about to step into holy ground. Hegesostele- grave marker, representation of a real woman who is named in the inscription. Scene of her sitting on and elegant chair interacting with a slave who is holding a box with jewelry coming out of it. Not in a real domestic space but a super natural space in the world of the dead. Figures are in profile but have hallmarks of classical style, look young with unlined faces, no expression, aloof ( they are not interacting face to face). Intrest in details of drapery and how it hangs. Hegeso is fully draped as well as her head, she is chaste demur and virtuous. An aristocratic women who is not showing off her body so she doesn’t damage her reputation. Classical period ends in 323 bce with the death of Alexander the great. Greater intrest in emotions and drama to depict in art.
