Bitter Orange Bitter Orange Background Bitter Orange is an herbal product which comes the Bitter Orange tree ( Citrus aurantium, Seville Orange ). It is found naturally in tropical Asia , but is cultivated in Africa, Arabia, Syria, Spain, Italy, and North America. Bitter Orange has been used for many years in many cultures as an herbal remedy. When the unripe fruit peel is dried it is sometimes called Zhi Shi.With Ephedra being pulled off the market in 2004, Bitter Orange has become a popular weight loss supplement. It is said to increase metabolism and suppress the appetite, although historically Bitter Orange has been used as an appetite stimulant. Purported Health Effects -Weight loss supplement -Active ingredients found in the oil of the Bitter Orange rind - Synephrine and Octopamine. These act similar to ephedra. -Octopamine - shrink fat cells in animal studies, minimal studies conducted with humans. -Synephrine - stimulates metabolic rate,but it does not seem to work on as many types
