Unformatted text preview: GLUCOSAMINE Glucosamine is a dietary supplement typically used to treat joint conditions associated with arthritis. Although it is not approved by the FDA and some speculate about its efficacy, many studies have supported a positive effect of glucosamine on joint conditions such as osteoarthritis. Glucosamine is produced naturally in the body. It is an amino monosaccharide that aides in the production of cartilage and synovial fluid. The production of glucosamine in the body decreases with age. STRUCTURE & FORMS: Glucosamine is available in three forms: -Glucosamine hydrochloride (or Glucosamine HCL) -Glucosamine sulfate (preferred form) -N-acetyl glucosamine (NAG) In addition to glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate and methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) are commonly used in conjunction with or independent glucosamine. Glucosamine is an aminomonosaccharide composed of glucose and an amine (nitrogen and two molecules of hydrogen). Glucosamine is a naturally occurring substance, derived from shellfish. In most human tissue, glucosamine is present as a natural compound and has special tropism (growth-promotion) for cartilaginous tissue.
