Assignment: Ethnic Groups and Discrimination When Italian immigrants came to the Untied State the nationality was seen as lower class. Italians worked in industries that were industrial and very physical; many times an Italian man would be paid little to none for all the hard work that was done. The average wage in the early 1900 was around fifty-cents. Italians worked factory and construction jobs to support the family. Many times the Italians lived in very poor neighborhood. This gave the Italian community a reputation for being of poor class (Digital History using new technologies to enhance teaching and research, 2009). Due to adversity, Italian Immigrants took pride in working hard and becoming proud and honest people. Many older Italians take pride in all the difficulties that his or her family has accomplished. Italians have faced extreme stereotype and have proven to the Untied State how valuable Italians are. Due to this pride later generations of Italian Americans feel pride in being An Italian American. In preparing for this paper one spoke to a grandparent. As an older Italian one was ask what her parents did for a job. Her mother worked in a factory and her father worked as welder. At sixteen-years-old she went to work for Levi Strauss. Eventually with hard work became an office manager and worked for the same company for over thirty years. Her husband was a truck driver
