Final Project: UNESCO Paper “The established preserve protects the Ituri rainforests of the Congo River Basin. There are several types of vegetation and animals. The land has rainforest, the Epulu River, mountains, and forests. The Reserve contains threatened species of primates and birds, an immense flora, more than 4,000 of the estimated 30,000 okapi surviving in the wild and dramatic scenery including waterfalls on the Ituri and Epulu rivers . It is also of special interest as the homeland of traditional nomadic Mbuti and Efe pygmy hunter-gatherers” (The Encyclopedia of Earth, 2010). There are many species of birds, mammals, insect, and reptiles. The animals vary from omnivores and carnivores. There is wide variety of plants and flowers among the different terrains of land. “ There are 302 species of trees, including understory trees. There are 30 species of lianas recorded. There are 670 woody plant species identified. There are four main forest types: swamp forest, mixed forest, Mbau forest, and secondary forest. Swamp forest is around the narrow strips along drainage channels throughout the reserve. Mixed forest has tall tree with a crown that reach the height of 30-40 m. Heterogeneous canopy have Emergent trees with an open understory with dense sub-canopy. 111 tree species and 32 lianas are recorded. The canopy tree species are Julbernardia seretii, Cynometra alexandri, Cleistanthus michelsonii, and Klainedoxa gabonensis. Large emergent trees include Irvingia excelsa, I. robur, I. grandiflora, Klainedoxa gabonensis, Cannarium schweinfurthii, Pachylesma tessmannii, Entandrophragma spp., Alstonia boonei, Celtis adolphi-friderici, Pterocarpus soyauxii, Parinari congensis and Piptadeniastrum africanum. The Mbau forest is 90% dominated by Gilbertiodendron dewevrei. The Emergents are a rare in forest. Species of Emergents include Irvingia excelsa and Tessmannis anomela. The Uapaca guineesis, Cannarium schweinfurthii and Entandrophragma give shade to intolerant species of direct sunlight. The Secondary forest is in the areas of the Ituri are deforested. There
