Stress can be an inducing event for mental illness Stress is the response o Stressor is the event or stimulus Ex: The guy that mugs you is the stressor, what you feel is the stress Stress is due to bad coping Good stress = eustress Bad stress = distress The body is a dynamic system that is always changing- The body is always trying to get back to homeostatic stage Reaction to stress: Intense fear Horror Helplessness Ruination Hypothalamic Pituary- Adrenalaxis (HPA) > Negative feedback system >CRF from hypothalamus > ACTH from pituary > Cortisol from adrenals >Cortisol reduces inflammation! Predisposing factors >Nature of the stressor >Experience of crisis >Life changes >Perception of stressor >Tolerance >External resources and social support
