Mid-Term Essay Question 2 ESSAY QUESTIONS – TAKE HOME, Due February 4 th , 2010 Answer any 5 questions 1) Who is Otto Lilienthal? What role did he play in the history of aviation and early aerodynamics development? ANSWER: Otto Lilienthal is called the “first successful aviator” and the “Flying Man” in the history  of mankind. He was a German Engineer and the first man to launch himself into the air,  fly, and land safely. He founded the science of wing aerodynamics and laid the foundations for concepts we  still employ today through his fundamental research on birds and airfoils. Both his research and his successful flights between 1891 and 1896 inspired the Wright  Brothers. He influenced their research that resulted in the invention of the powered,  controllable, and heavier than air aircraft beginning in 1896 until their ultimate success in  1903. In 1889, he published a book outlining his theories based on the flights of birds. His book  became an aviation classic. In 1891, he built his first glider. Prior to his death in 1896, he had built eighteen models—fifteen monoplanes and three  biplanes. He had also taken more than 2,000 glider flights and he never quite abandoned  the idea that flapping wings was the key to motion. Lilienthal's gliders had one major  fault. They had no means of control other than the motions of the pilot who had to  contort himself and exercise considerable strength to affect the direction and stability of  the glider. Although there were design flaws, he had an immense influence on aviation. His writings  were translated and distributed worldwide. He   demonstrated   the   importance   of   identifying   the   principles   that   governed   an  experiment   before   proceeding   and   his   meticulous   documentation   of   his   research  provided guidance for those that came after him.

Mid-Term Essay Question 3 2) Sir Isaac Newton summarized three generalizations about force and motion. These are known as the laws of motion . In your own words, describe one of the three laws in detail. a. Give an example(s) of this law as it pertains to aircraft aerodynamics. ANSWER: Newton’s three Laws of Motion play a vital role in the study of aircraft movement. The  motion   of   an   aircraft   through   the   air   can   be   explained   and   described   by   physical  principles discovered over 300 years ago by Sir Isaac Newton. He had worked in many  areas of physics and mathematics. Newton’s Third Law of Motion states that “For every action, there is an equal and
