Biology 110 Paper 6 Dec. 9, 2009 Translation and Transcription Protein synthesis is a collaboration of genetic information and RNA working together to produce a valuable nutrient called protein. This process can be broken down into two steps: transcription and translation. These steps require the help from multiple sources such as mRNA, tRNA, and rRNA to maintain a free flowing process. By incorporating these fascinating molecules we are able to produce a product that is essential for everyday life. The first stage of protein synthesis is transcription which starts in the nucleus with DNA. This process begins with RNA polymerase attaching to a region of DNA called a promoter (Pg. 222). The promoter guides transcription by defining the direction and the strand to be transcribed. Once RNA polymerase binds to the promoter the initiation phase of transcription starts. Since RNA-DNA produce a weak bond the newest portion of RNA that is associated with RNA polymerase is bound to the DNA and the rest dangles off to the side. To better understand transcription, think of DNA as a teacher and RNA as a student; DNA preaches knowledge and RNA comprehends the material. The DNA stored in the nucleus is held together by complementary bases; these bases are unattached by an enzyme called helicase. During this
