Identify and briefly explain the functions of the digestive process: a. _______(1)_________ b. _______(2)_________ c. _______(3)_________ d. _______(4)_________ (1) Ingestion- Occurs when the mouth takes in food (2) Digestion- two form mechanical or chemical food breakdown (3) Movement- how food is moved along GI tract (4) Absorption- Absorbing nutrients from the food we took in (5) Elimination- Getting rid of excess 2. Identify and state the purpose of the segments of the first part of the digestive tract. (6) First step is ingestion taking in food through the mouth and chewing it up using the teeth. Once the food is chewed up enough the tongue helps move the food to the stomach. (7) The second step is digestion once the food happens in both the mouth and the stomach. Mechanical digestive occurs when the food is broken down into smaller pieces which are easier to absorb. Chemical digestion occurs with enzymes and takes place in the mouth stomach and stop in the small intestine. (7) The third step in movement the food that was processed either mechanical or chemical must moved through the GI tract to pass along the nutrients and get rid of the waste. 3.
