Tom Marler Worksheet 8 Biology 108 Oct. 3, 2009 1. Explain the differences between biotic and abiotic components of an ecosystem. ____(2)_________. (2) Abiotic components of an ecosystem are the nonliving components. Biotic components are living things that can be categorized according to their food source. 2. Compare and contrast autotrophs and heterotrophs. Identify at least 2 significant differences. _____(3)_____ and ____(4)_____. (3) Autotrophs require only inorganic nutrients and an outside energy source to produce organic nutrients for their own use and for all the other members of a community. Autotrophs are producers meaning they produce their own food source like algae producers’ chlorophyll and carries on photosynthesis (4) Heterotrophs need a source of organic nutrients. Heterotrophs are consumers meaning they consume their food. Carnivores eat other animals, Omnivores eat plants and animals, Detritus are organisms that feed off composing particles or organic matter. 3. Define and give an example of “niche”.____(5)____ and ___(6)_____ (5) Niche is the role an organism plays in an ecosystem (6) The role human play in the ecosystem 4. What is the difference in how nutrients and energy move through ecosystems? (7) Energy moves through the ecosystem because solar energy is absorbed by producers. Energy flow occurs because as nutrients pass from one population to another all the energy content is eventually converted to heat. The heat then dissipates in the environments. Without continual supply of solar energy ecosystem could not exist. Nutrients move through the ecosystem by producers taking inorganic chemicals from
