12/2/2008 Lecture #16 Immigration Identities and Political Transnationalism Outline Immigration incorporation and transnationalism: complimentary or contradictory processes? State policies and transnational social fields Identity formation within transnational fields o Migrants engagements in the transnational Immigration research tends to focus on incorporation to the “host” society. Transnational research brings into view (im)migrants continuing ties to the “home” country (economic, social, political, etc.) A social space: Migrants are able to keep connections with people in Mexico. Are host society incorporation and transnational engagement mutually exclusive processes? Conceptualizing Immigration Immigrants are thought to have left behind the homeland, heading abroad in search of a new and better life. Scholars are led to focus on processes of integration and/or assimilation in the receiving country. Country A
