Chapter 3 - Water and the Fitness of the Environment I. Effects of Water’s Polarity A. All organisms we know of are made mostly of water and live in an environment dominated by water. Water is cohesive and adhesive, meaning it is attracted to itself as well as other surfaces, which makes it easier to defy gravity in some instances. Water stabilizes temperature by holding excess moisture and giving it off as needed. Water expands upon freezing, making ice float instead of freeze the entire collection of water. Lastly, water is a versatile solvent, which helps maintain most of life’s functions like pH balancing. B. The water molecule is shaped similar like a wide V, with opposing charges on opposite ends. The two hydrogen atoms are attracted to the single oxygen atom by hydrogen bonding. Hydrogen bonding forms cohesion and adhesion as well as causing ice to float and dissociation to occur. C. The negatively charged region of the hydrogen molecule is attracted to the positively charged region of the oxygen molecule because of polar sides in each molecule; this leads to hydrogen bonding between water molecules and among themselves. D. Cohesion, stabilizing temperature, expansion upon freezing, and versatility as a solvent. E. Cohesion of water helps plants absorb water from ground despite gravity. The vessels extend upward, yet the water attaches to the veins through adhesion and continues to move in this direction. F.
