1 CMN136-EXAM #1 TEXT STUDY GUIDE CHAPTER 1: The Challenge of Organizational Communication 1.) What are the four (relatively new) aspects of our world that make it complicated? What makes them important? (2-9) a.) Globalization- it has become a truism that we now live in a global economy and participate in a global marketplace. b.) Terrorism- The terrorist attack on 9/11/2001 changed the world in profound ways. Terrorism will be a watchword in our lives for many years to come. c.) Climate change- Al gore argues that humanity’s role in climate change is an issue that can no longer be denied and must be addressed by governments, businesses, and individuals. “Global warming” can be attributed to the activities of individuals and organization. Organizational communication is also important in dealing with many of the effects of global warming such as the increased evidence of forest fires and weather disasters like hurricanes. d.) Changing demographics- describes who we are in the most basic of terms, and thus can have a foundational impact on how we communicate with each other, how we organize, how we address critical problems in our social world, and even what those problems are in a given time and place. 2.) What are demographics and what were the four changes identified? (8) -Demographics refer to statistical description of characteristics of population- things like age, race, income, educational attainment, and so one. 3.) What are the questions confronting organizational communication scholars as they consider demographic shifts? (9) a.) How can we communicate with members of culturally diverse workforce in ways that respect difference and help achieve organizational and individual goals? b.) How do members of the “sandwich generation” cope with the stresses of work and family concerns? c.) What are the various communication patterns and needs of individual from different age groups? d.) How can we use communication technology to design virtual workplaces for employees in a variety of locations? e.) How can we make the tough decisions regarding the roles of institutions and government in supporting an aging America? f.)
