Chapters 3 – 5 and Appendix A Review Chapter 3 Draw Free Body Diagrams A free body diagram is a pictorial representation of the equations of motion/equilibrium equations. We draw a F.B.D. using the BARFD pneumonic. B – Body A – Axes and Positive Moment Direction R – Resultant Forces (I.E. when we free the body from its supports the resultants are the forces caused by the supports) F – Applied Forces and Weights D – Dimensions of Pertinent Angles and Lengths Apply Equilibrium Equations Apply the equilibrium equations to the F.B.D. to find the resultant forces on the body. Σ F x = 0 Σ F y = 0 Σ F z = 0 Σ M axis = 0 Chapter 4 Structural Analysis Trusses Straight 2-force members connected at ends with pins. Apply one of two methods to determine the member forces. Method of Joints (Solve for no more than 2 unknowns per joint) 1) Find the resultant forces with methods from chapter 3 2) Isolate a single joint and make a F.B.D. of that joint 3) Solve for member forces using the Equilibrium Equations Σ F x = 0 Σ F y = 0 Method of Sections 1) Find the resultant forces with methods from chapter 3 2) Pass a section cut through no more than 3-independent unknown forces
