Decision Making Models • Rational/Normative – what people should do – not necessarily how to do it – utility concept – overall value of a choice • Descriptive or Rules of Thumb – ill structured problem – dynamic situation – too much information – time constraints or stress Descriptive Decision Models • Heuristics – simplified shortcuts or rules- of-thumb • Satisficing – making a decision that is “good enough” for the situation • Biases – could alter the decision because of previous experiences/ideas • Best decisions come when time is not limited and all options are open, not “real world” Limits on Info Processing...
