Chapter 8 Workbook 1. Define the following: a. Shielding (screening)-the phenomenon of reducing the full nuclear charge by virtue of electron-electron repulsion b. Effective nuclear charge (Z eff )- the reduced nuclear charge experienced by electrons due to presence of other screening/shielding electrons c. Pauli Exclusion Principle-no 2 electrons may have the same set of 4 q.n. d. Hund’s Rule-when degenerate orbitals are available, electrons occupy them singly first 2. What are the possible values for electron spin quantum number (m s )? +1/2 or -1/2 3. Give the trends across a period and down a group for the following atomic properties: ionization energy, atomic radius, ionic radius, and electron affinity. IE- increases l r and decreases down a group AR-decreases l r and increases down a group IR- metal ions are smaller than parent atom, nonmetal ions are larger than parent atom. Across a period through metals it decreases, peaking with group 15 (N 3- group) and then decreasing again. Down a group IR increases
