Jonathon Nguyen 16323012 Experiment 5 Part 2: The Determination of Calcium and Magnesium in Milk by EDTA Titrations AIM: Determine the total amount of calcium and magnesium in milk by EDTA titrations. INTRODUCTION: Disodium EDTA is commonly used to standardize aqueous solutions containing transition metal. Disodium EDTA only forms four coordinate covalent bonds to metal cations at pH values 12 (Calcium and magnesium in this experiment). In this pH range, the complex is unable to donate electrons to the formation of coordinate covalent bonds. Disodium EDTA forms four coordinate covalent bonds to magnesium cations (only) at pH values 10. Therefore, by working out the difference between titrations performed at the two pH values, the amount of both magnesium and calcium can can be calculated. Hydroxynapthol Blue is an ‘azo’ compound used as an acid-base indicator due to the different colours of its acid and salt forms. EXPERIMENTAL:
