Proteins and Genes Assignment 2009 Proteins and Genes Assignment 2009 Task 1: Define and describe the following terms: Gene Expression This term implies that DNA (or in some cases RNA) being the master controls of the cell, controls all the cellular activities through producing proteins which has diverse functions. As genome is highly conserved and has stretches of DNA called genes which are functional units coding for a single peptide chain which may or may not form a whole protein molecule. Gene Regulation Gene regulation is the process whereby genes are regulated to economise the gene production of that particular gene produced, ie. protein. As Alberts’ says, the cell can control the protein it makes by many processes, that inclduing: 1. Controlling when and how often a given gene is transcribed 2. Controlling how the RNA transcript processed Protein Expression Protein expression is how a particular protein is synthesized which may or may not be activated form. Protein Activation Once the protein is synthesized, it is usually not in active form and must be further processed to become functional. They are activated by different methods such as: Covalent modification Cleavage of protein Combining of inactive monomers into active oligomers Task 2: Proteins performing varieties of cellular activities are activated by different methods such as: (1) Covalent modification eg; phosphorylation (2) Cleavage of protein (zymogen to active forms) (3) Combining of inactive monomers into active oligomers etc., Jonathon Nguyen | 16323012
