Probability and Random Signal Analysis (EE 3180) Project #3 Decoy Identification Using Autocorrelation Estimates A radar system is placed in low earth orbit to provide targeting information concerning reentry vehicles. The observing satellites are required to distinguish between warheads and decoys. The distinguishing feature is weight which results in larger aerodynamic accelerations for the decoy s both vertically and horizontally. Due to cost constraints, the number of radar satellites is kept to a minimum, which results in a probable scenario where the targeting satellite is observing a reentry vehicle horizontally. Note that the radar has better range resolution than angular so the range motion of the vehicle will be used as a discrimination criterion. The proposed identification scheme is to compare the autocorrelation estimate of the radial position of a reentry vehicle at a specified time delay to discriminate between warheads and decoys.
