Leadership Theories Theory Major Points Trait Approach Great person theory. Leaders are born. Stogdill & Mann’s Critiques Stogdill found 5 traits in leaders—intelligence, dominance, self-confidence, level of energy & activity, and  task-relevant knowledge. But found many followers had these traits too. Mann found intelligence was the best  predictor of leadership but all correlations between traits and leadership were weak Kouzes & Posner Identified 4 traits that people around the world value: Honesty, forward looking, inspiring, and competent Emotional Intelligence Daniel Goleman identified components of emotional intelligence that he believes are vital to leadership. Self- Awareness, Self-Management, Social Competence, and Relationship Management Tim Judge Examined the relationship among the Big 5 Personality traits and leadership emergence and effectiveness.  Found extraversion to be most positively related to leadership. Believes personality is more important than  intelligence. Behavior Styles Patterns of behavior that enable leaders to influence others. Leaders are made, not born theory. Ohio State Studies Matrix of consideration for group members’ needs and desires and initiating structure to organize work for  maximum output. University of Michigan Studies Employee centered and job centered styles of leadership. Effective leaders have supportive relationships with  employees, use group methods of supervision, and set high performance goals Situational Leadership Suggests that the effectiveness of a particular style of leader behavior depends on the situation Fiedler’s Contingency Model Performance of a leader depends on the degree to which the situation gives the leader control and influence  and the leader’s motivation-task or people. Important situational control factors include leader-member  relations, task structure, and position power. Path-Goal Theory Developed by House and recently revised. Recognizes 9 leader behaviors and 5 measures of leadership  effectiveness. Two groups of contingency factors-- employee characteristics and environmental factors that  cause one style of leadership to be more effective than another. Leader- do the right thing;  Manager- do things right Other Approaches Transformational Leadership Transforms employees to pursue organizational goals over self-interests. Leader behavior includes inspirational  motivation, idealized influence, individualized consideration, and intellectual stimulation.
