Chapter 9 SMART Goals • Specific- precise rather than vague terms, quantified when possible • Measurable- measurement device needed to asses the extent to which goal is accomplished, must consider quality in criteria; interplay between quantity and quality • Attainable- realistic, challenging, and attainable. Impossible goals reduce motivation. • Results oriented- focus on desired end results that support the organization’s vision. Activities support achievement of goals and are outlined in action plans. Should start with to and followed by complete, acquire, produce, increase, and decrease; do NOT use develop, conduct, implement, or monitor • Time bound- target dates for completion Extrinsic/Intrinsic Rewards-• Extrinsic Rewards- Financial, material, or social rewards from the environment • Intrinsic Rewards- Self-granted, psychic awards Intrinsic Building Blocks
