Shivali Gupta September 22, 2009 BIS 152 Section 001 Maria Pallavicini T.A. Heather Bryan Homework 7 Chapter 11: # 1, 4, 5, 6, and 8 1. Knowing the various genetic and epigenetic changes that occur during multi-step tumorigenesis, which of these would you say are more likely to be readily uncovered and which may be difficult to identify? Describe the reasons for these assignments. Of these two types of changes that during multi-step tumorigenesis, genetic changes may be difficult to identify, because there are various genetic changes that can occur in cells and there can be multiple within one cell which have adverse effects on the multiple signaling pathways which all can be very difficult to determine in a cell. There can be multiple genetic changes due to chromosomal aberrations that can lead to multiple mutations in genes encoding for a variety of proteins. On the other hand epigenetic changes are readily uncovered. 4. What arguments can be mustered that favor the notion that the bulk of human carcinogens act as promoters rather than initiators of tumorigenesis? The bulk of human carcinogens act as promoters rather than initiators of tumorigenesis, because promoters act as to promote the tumor formation continuously that was initiated by the initiator. Initiators
