What diverse lines of evidence prove directly that most carcinoma cells depend on stromal cell types for various types of physiologic support? Histopathological characterizations of epithelial tumors reveal that they are composed of a variety of distinct cell types. A number of stromal cell types populate the tumor, such as the fibroblast, myofibroblasts, endothelial cells, pericytes, smooth muscle cells, adipocytes, macrophages, lymphocytes, and mast cells; communication between such dissimilar cell types is known as heterotypic signaling. Heterotypic signaling is used by each cell type to allow or limit the proliferation of the other neighboring cell types.
