Unit 1 Physics notes: Newton’s First Law of Motion o An object moves in a straight line and at constant speed except to the extent that it interacts with other objects. Detecting Interactions: o Change of Velocity Change of Direction of Motion Change of Speed o Change of Identity o Change of Shape or Configuration o Change of Temperature o Change of Position* Ex) observe an object at rest at one location and late you observe it again at rest but in a different location. Then, interaction has occurred to give the object some velocity to move to that position. But an object moving position at constant speed and direction (uniform motion) would not quality because there was no net interactions Graphical Addition of Vectors: (Tip to Tail) o ** Vector Addition is commutative o **Associative Property holds for vector addition o Draw the first vector, A o Move the second vector, B, (without rotating it) so its tail is located at the tip of the first vector o Draw a new vector from the tail of vector A to the top of vector B Graphical Subtraction of Vectors: (Tail to Tail) o **Vector subtraction is not commutative o **Associative Property holds for vector subtraction o Draw the first vector, A o Move the second vector, B, (without rotating it) so its tail is located at the tail of the first vector o Draw a new vector from the top of vector B to the tip of vector A Velocity: o V avg = d/t V avg = Δ r/ Δ t o If the change in velocity is very small over the time interval of interest, we can use the final
