MUSIC 75 STUDY GUIDE FOR MARCH 12 MIDTERM The midterm is a chance for us to evaluate your understanding of the music before 1500.  Our questions will be drawn from material in lecture, section, and the anthology. The test  will consist of four sections: short answer questions, listening, single sheets, and essay  questions. Short answer : This section will cover terminology, genres, parts of the liturgy and their  musical forms, biographical and historical questions. (See list below.) Listening :  We will play excerpts in class and ask you a specific question about each. We  may ask you to identify sections of Notre Dame polyphony in organum purum or discant,  to hear the difference between psalm tones and melismatic chant, to discuss the musical  style of a sequence, to identify a piece of chant according to its form (limited to hymn,  sequence, alleluia), and to identify a song in one of the
