1 PH 101: MID-TERM STUDY GUIDE Arguments If you want to convince others of the correctness of your opinions or assertion, you should give acceptable reasons The combination of premises and conclusion o Premise – reasons Indicators: since, for, because o Conclusion – assertion (position/claim) Indicators: therefore, hence, consequently, so, it follows that Any group of statements of which conclusion is claimed to follow from the premises Valid Argument The truth of the premises guarantees the truth of the conclusion It is impossible that the premises be true and the conclusion false If you accept the premises, you have to accept the conclusion Sound Argument The argument is valid/logical The premises are all true/acceptable o It is always possible to add more premises to make the argument more acceptable Principle of Charity We should try to be as charitable as possible when reconstructing the author’s argument o “Reconstructing” the argument : identify the major conclusion of the author and also his/her supporting reasons (premises) We must reconstruct the author’s argument so that his/her conclusion is strongly supported by
