Spatial Neglect Spatial Neglect can also be defined as functional disability and is usually caused by injury to the brain. Spatial Neglect causes you to be unable to respond to stimuli and usually affects people who have an injury to the right cortical hemisphere. Spatial neglect affects one’s attention and perception, Imagery and representation, Self monitoring, emotional processing, arousal, motor intentional deficits, and personal neglect. Spatial Neglect can greatly increase the risk of stroke, which can eventually lead to death. Symptoms of spatial neglect are someone who doesn’t groom or much use the left side of the body. They may steer their wheel chair toward the right, or when you speak to them from the left side, they may turn to the right to speak back. They don’t have control over the left side of their body, therefore they don’t bother with it at all. Sometimes they will deny ownership of the left limbs, claiming they belong to someone else.
