These are the Seven Deadly Sins to Avoid When Composing a Thesis 1 Thou shalt not write a fragment. It must be expressed in a complete sentence. Poor: How life is in a ghetto Better: Residents of a racial ghetto have higher death rates that the general U.S. population. 2. Thou shalt not write a question. (Usually the answer to the question is the thesis.) Poor: Should eighteen-year-olds have the right to vote? Better: Anyone who is old enough to fight a war is old enough to vote. 3. Thou shalt not use phrases such as "I think" (it weakens your statement and the authorship implies it is your opinion). Poor: I'm not sure but in my opinion, most men wear beards because they are trying to "find themselves." Better: Most men wear beards to emphasize their male identity. 4. Thou shalt not combine elements that are not clearly related. Poor: Because the press is often inaccurate, we should never read newspapers.

Unformatted text preview: Better: Because the press is often inaccurate, we should have more than one source for our news. 5. Thou shalt not use vague language. Poor: Bad things will happen if you don't surface right when you're scuba diving. Better: A scuba diver who comes to the surface faster than his bubbles risks severe injury from an air embolism. 6. Thou shalt not use muddled or incoherent language. Poor: Student parking permits at UVSC are a problem because the students park in places off campus where they don't have to pay and end up spending more. Better: The cost of student parking should be included in student fees. 7. Thou shalt not use figurative language. Poor: Cosmic Aeroplane is an oasis in Utah's literary desert. Better: Salt Lake City's Cosmic Aeroplane is unique among bookstores in Utah. You may want to make a copy of these to refer to while taking Lesson 7 Quiz in the quizzes section....

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
