Timeline of the Constitutions 1836 Constitution Texas declared its independence from Mexico in 1836 The Republic of Texas was established and the constitution was adopted 1836 Texas Constitution contained a declaration of rights that consisted of 17 articles It created a bicameral Congress (Senate and a House) Members were popularly elected The judicial branch consisted of courts at 4 levels: justice, county, district, and supreme court Included a preamble, the incorporation of separation of powers combined with checks and balances, recognition of slavery, a bill of rights, and an amending process Spanish Mexican Law found its way into the constitution 1845 Constitution When Texas joined the United States a new constitution was necessary US Congress accepted the new constitution in December 1845, transfer of power occurred in February This constitution is cited as among the best of all state constitutions
